Travelling with Humira

Ken Stewart (Sydney, NSW)
I am sending you this email so that you may pass on this information to others using Humira that might be traveling away from home for long periods.
I have just returned from 6 weeks overseas where I had to keep my Humira between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius for 5 of those weeks away.
Firstly one needs to contact the airlines in advance and get their medical needs forms filled in by a GP or specialist. This enables consent to take a syringe on the plane and also alerts the crew to a possible need for ice to be supplied during the flight. The American product (linked below) did the job perfectly with up to 24 hours of staying within the limitations required to keep the Humira in a safe and usable condition. The super cooler bag and "high tech ice" is $65 US and the radio thermometer is $30 US. The freight is around $60 US so the combined system delivered for me in February was $150.08 AU.
Medium Bag .... http://www.polarbearcoolers.com/product/medical_coolers/mdm-med-cooler.html
Radio Thermometer ... http://www.polarbearcoolers.com/product/polar_bear_accessories/thermometer.html
Unfortunately the thermometer only comes in Fahrenheit so I marked the 2 degrees and 8 degrees limits in Fahrenheit on my readout module.
(35.6 degrees to 46.4 degrees) so I didn't have to remember the conversion.
The contact at the company is Leslie Woodie below and ccd. (Hi Leslie- thanks again for your rapid supply of the product in time for my departure).
Using this system to keep my medicine in the safe temperature range during flights, and using the hotel refrigeration in the room, or in the hotel kitchen refrigerator, when none was available in the room, I was able to have the injection at the required two week intervals and was able to keep in good health and mobility during 6 weeks of touring around South America.
The radio thermometer allowed me to do random temperature checks on my medicine in whichever refrigerated storage it was placed.
Regards,

Sometime last month I called the customer service number and requested information for patching holes in the insulation material of the cooler. I don't know if I was speaking to you on the phone, but my name is Adam and I'm from Melbourne Beach, Florida. Anyway, it was suggested that I apply shoe goo to patch the holes to prevent water leakage. About a week later I received a package in the mail with two Techni Ice sheets, some stickers, and a shirt. I was very grateful to receive this free merchandise as well as the generous offer to buy a replacement cooler for $15. I never repaired the holes because I have been using the ice sheets instead which are much more sustainable and reduce the cost of buying ten pounds of ice every time I go fishing. Polar Bear has gained my full support and customer loyalty from not only the solid products, but great customer service as well thank you. In the future I will be making more purchases of your products. I've also been wearing the shirt and endorsing Polar Bear products to other fisherman, friends, and outdoor enthusiasts. I've also written a review on Amazon.com in the customer feedback section to spread the word to buy Polar Bear.
In central Florida there is a high demand for fishing and camping related products like coolers because of the sportsman enriched local culture and abundant inshore waters. Recently, I have noticed a developing trend of recreational fisherman reducing the expense of power boating and moving towards angling from more cost effective paddle powered vessels such as kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. If Polar Bear manufactured a product that remained portable, durable, and affordable to this emerging market of economically minded fisherman you would be one of the first. Personally, I have searched and searched to find a product meeting those needs and there is nothing that is affordable. My only suggestions would be to make modifications to the strength of the insulation material to prevent small punctures from dorsal spines and to increase the dimensions for more storage capacity. Most inshore fish that people catch and keep are between 12in and 26in in length. Look into it because I'm one guy in central Florida while this movement towards paddle powered fishing vessels is happening through out the south east and especially in Louisiana, Texas, Florida, and along your coast of Georgia. Thank you again for the great product, great customer service, and free merchandise.

I have a business where I too am forced to focus on customer service. With that said, I'd like to thank you and applaud your company's customer service. Leslie, was so helpful with my issue and she made me "feel" what I don't really even know, and that is your company's mission, which must be to provide a quality product at a fair price and to take care of their customers as well as stand behind their product. She showed confidence in your company / product and was willing to take care of me immediately. Not only that, she was able to provide this in a timely manor.
For this, I will be suggesting that we use your company for several companies I am involved with for several big orders of coolers with possibly logo's on them.
Please forward this e mail on to the owner, human resources person, and or the "boss" and then please send me some info on bulk ordering with the pricing and possibilities of monogramming etc.

Note from Polar Bear Coolers: The Blue Gel Bullet is not meant to be frozen, only refrigerated. If it is frozen, it can bust the plastic container; and, if it does not break the container, it can freeze the medication. Therefore, is it best to not freeze the bullet. POLAR BEAR COOLERS REVIEW

Polar Bear Coolers is an up and coming company based out of Cumming, GA. They have a line of coolers that is slightly different than the standard hard box coolers that many of us have become accustomed to using.
The coolers are made out of a heavy duty nylon outer shell and it does not disappoint! The material just feels tough and that's something I like. I have taken this cooler on multiple trips and been kind of rough with it but, you could never tell as there is not a single mark on the outside of the cooler. They claim that the cooler is both leak and sweat proof so, of course I had to put it to the test. I filled up the cooler with boiling water and let in sit in the cooler for 3 hours. The cooler was not leaking or sweating on the outside and when opened I was hit with a burst steam and the water was still very hot. The boiling water didn't harm the inside of the cooler in any way!
Lets be honest, handling boiling water is pretty cool but, the general masses use coolers to keep things cold. Polar Bear Coolers claim that their cooler will keep ice for at least 24 hours in 100 degree heat. Again, I had to test this for myself. I took a gallon jug filled with water and froze it solid. I then placed only this into the cooler zipped it up and waited. 24 hours later the jug was still almost solid ice. I left it in the cooler and zipped it back up. After 36 hours I checked again and this time the jug was about half frozen. This was done in 70 degree temperature that was held constant. I have no doubt that a cooler full of ice would have no problem staying cold for 24 hours or longer, even in extreme heat.
What makes the cooler perform like this is the Dura-Temp Liner that has a 5 layer air trap design to help keep cold things cold and hot things hot. This liner is also puncture resistant and will not mold or mildew. Anyone who has allergies can rejoice at the last line, I know I did. This liner can also be pulled out to be cleaned with soap and water to keep your cooler looking fresh and clean.
These coolers come in a 6 pack, 12 pack, 24 pack, 48 pack and backpack models. You can get a variety of colors but, the coolest part is they can customize your cooler for you. They can put your logo, name, or almost anything you can think up on the side of your cooler to give it that ME feeling that many of us love. Another feel good part of these coolers is the built in bottle opener that is attached to the zipper, genius!
Recommendation: This is an amazing cooler and an amazing company who will bend over backwards to make sure you are satisfied with your purchase.I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a new cooling device.

The Polar Bear Coolers have been fantastic for us and we want to thank you and share our story with you, just so you know.
Since we live abroad and travel to Houston frequently to get supplies, we decided that we would explore the possibility of bringing down frozen food in our luggage, as checked baggage on a plane. A friend suggested that we try the Polar Coolers.
So, 18 months ago, we bought our first Polar 48-pack cooler, filled it with frozen food, stuffed the pack into a duffel bag and checked it in as luggage on our flight. When we got home that evening and opened the Polar cooler, the food was still frozen rock solid, even though we hadn't put any ice in the cooler. We knew that we were on to something.
These days, we travel to Houston every 4-6 weeks. We own three Polar 48-packs and two 24-packs. We routinely pack 200 pounds of frozen food in those packs. We check-in the three 48-packs as luggage and we carry the two 24-packs onto the plane. We typically pack the polar packs in Houston at 9am and when we open them again at 5pm at home, all of the contents are still frozen solid.
On our most recent trip a couple weeks back, one of our 48-packs did not arrive on our flight due to an Airline error. That pack contained about $1,000 worth of food. The Airline promised to deliver the bag to us the following day, but we were sure that the contents would be ruined. Instead, when they delivered the bag to us the next day, the food inside was still frozen solid. This was 27 hours after we first packed that 48-pack! We couldn't believe it.
That last episode is what prompted us to write this note. Thank you for making such great products. Keep up the great work. And if you all are ever in our neck of the woods, please let us know so that we can buy you dinner and say thanks in person.

We had to carry enough medications to last a month during our trip to Europe in September, requiring the meds to be kept between 35.6 F and 46.4 F. We were in transit for about 26 hours & the cooler held the temperature during the flights and layovers without refreshing. Excellent cooler excellent re-usable ice packs. In fact, we used the cooler and ice packs in preference to the fridges in our hotels as we could get a more constant temperature (the digital thermometer worked well). We sometimes had problems with hotels not being able to re-freeze our ice packs, but then we just used ice (well bagged & sealed). The temperature held well either way - even in the high temperatures in Spain - although we avoided leaving the cooler in direct sun.
Awesome product AND we got through some of the toughest airport security with the ice packs - which was a major concern for us. Several security checkpoints did swab the ice packs but we got through - no problem.
Thank you for your great products and thank you for your help. Much appreciated!!

Thank you Polar Bear for your fabulous Ice-N-Go Med Cooler. This is the only cooler that I have found that will keep the Forteo pen at the correct temperature for up to 22 hours!!!!!!! I experimented with other coolers and none worked for this many hours. I have traveled extensively for the past ten months with my Forteo in this cooler and it has never let me down.!!! I place a bag of ice cubes on the bottom of the cooler, then put into the cooler the blue cylinder with the Forteo pen and the Acurite wireless thermometer in the large plastic bag and place small bags of ice cubes all around the cooler. Be sure to keep the blue cylinder in the refrigerator when not using the cooler so that it is at a good temperature when you are ready to travel. This cooler has allowed me to travel on long plane trips, have long layovers in
airports and get onto another plane. It even helped me to survive Hurricane Sandy for fourteen days with no electricity. I kept the Forteo in the cooler and replaced the ice every 22 hours. It was a life saver!!! It is absolutely fabulous!!!!!!!!!!

When we were planning our European vacation, my wife, who is on Forteo, was concerned about transporting her medication on the 26 hours it would take until we could get to refrigeration. I researched many products, and found the Ice-N-Go Med Cooler to best fit the requirements. My only question was, would it perform as the companies information stated. Now that we've completed our trip, I can state that if anything, it performed better than promised. After about 16 hours of travel we replenished the ice supply on our aircraft and at the end of our journey the Forteo made the trip perfectly. Thanks Polar Bear!

Early cooling in cardiac arrest may improve survival Abstract 13
Navy Large EMT Cooler

Submitted By:
Kevin (Charleston , WV)
Study highlights: In a European study, patients were more likely to survive without brain damage after a cardiac arrest if emergency medical technicians lowered their body temperature early during resuscitation. Cooling is recommended for comatose patients after cardiac arrest, and this study demonstrates the potential benefits of beginning cooling even sooner during the arrest in the pre-hospital setting. Video clip interview with Dr. Maaret Castren located at bottom of page ORLANDO, FLA., Nov. 15, 2009 – Rapidly cooling a person in cardiac arrest may improve their chance of survival without brain damage, according to research presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2009. “We now have a method that is safe and can be started within minutes of cardiac arrest to minimize damage during this very critical period,” said Maaret Castrén, M.D., lead author of the study and professor of emergency medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. For years, people hospitalized after cardiac arrest have been cooled to reduce injury to the brain and other tissues that occurs when the blood supply returns after being temporarily halted. In the PRINCE (Pre-Resuscitation Intra-Nasal Cooling Effectiveness) investigation, Castrén and colleagues at 14 other centers across Europe used a new tool, RhinoChill, that cools the brain during ongoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Researchers randomized 200 adults going into witnessed cardiac arrest to receive either standard resuscitation or resuscitation with cooling started as soon as possible during the arrest, with ongoing CPR. All patients who survived to hospitalization were further cooled according to standard criteria. Eighteen patients were excluded from the analysis because a ‘do-not-resuscitate’ order was found or there was a non-cardiac reason for their cardiac arrest. In the 182 patients reported, 83 (average age 66 years, 71 percent male) were randomized to receive nasal cooling (although two were not cooled because of user or device problems) and 99 (average age 64.8, 78 percent male) received standard care. RhinoChill is a non-invasive device that introduces coolant through nasal prongs. The system is battery-powered and requires no refrigeration, making it suitable for emergency medical technicians in the field to use while a person is receiving CPR. The patients in each group were similar in their initial heart rhythms, how much time lapsed before CPR was started and whether CPR restored a pulse. The median time between arrest and the initiation of cooling was 23 minutes. On arrival at the hospital, the cooled patients’ temperatures (measured at the eardrum) were significantly lower (average 34.2ºC, 93.56ºF) than those receiving standard care (35.5ºC, 95.9ºF, p = 0.0001). In the total group: 46.7 percent of those cooled survived to hospital discharge, compared with 31 percent of those receiving standard care; 36.7 percent of those cooled were in good neurological condition on hospital discharge, compared with 21.4 percent of those receiving standard care. In the 137 patients in whom resuscitation efforts began within 10 minutes of cardiac arrest: 59.1 percent of those cooled survived to hospital discharge, compared with 29.4 percent of those receiving standard care; 45.5 percent of those cooled were neurologically intact at hospital discharge, compared with 17.6 percent of those receiving standard care (p=.01, adjusted for age, bystander CPR, ALS arrival; p=.028, unadjusted). “Our results show that the earlier you can do the cooling, the better,” Castrén said. “When resuscitation efforts were delayed, there was no significant difference in survival.” In a time analysis, patients who received a combination of early CPR started within six minutes of collapse and cooling had the best outcomes. Patients with ventricular fibrillation (VF), whose heart chambers aren’t pumping blood because they are twitching rapidly and erratically instead of fully contracting, are the subgroup of cardiac arrest patients most likely to survive. In this study, of the 56 patients who had VF: 62.5 percent of those cooled survived to hospital discharge, compared with 47.6 percent of those who received standard care; 50 percent of those cooled were neurologically intact at hospital discharge, compared to 28.6 percent of those who received standard care. “RhinoChill is easy and safe to use during a cardiac arrest outside of the hospital,” said Denise Barbut, M.D., senior author of the study and president and chairman of BeneChill, Inc., maker of the device. “Although the study was not powered to look at outcomes, there seemed to be a significant benefit on survival and neurologically intact survival, specifically in those treated within 10 minutes.” Eighteen adverse reactions were reported after the treatment, including three nosebleeds and 13 nasal discolorations. I just got back from my trip that cause me to get the cooler, and I wanted to tell you that it worked out great. My flight home included a layover and a "how to get to the car" escapade that made the trip home 15 hours, easy. When I unpacked to cooler, the meds were still chilled. I used blue ice packs for the trip down, with different ice packs (similar to the ones included in that they were the squares, but much easier to work with) for the trip home and that worked fine. Since I was in Central America, I was very concerned that the ungodly heat would melt the ice packs, but the cooler itself kept things cold. Thanks for your advice with the cooler - unlike my trip last year, I did NOT have my medication spoil in transport!

Greetings: I am writing to express my sincere appreciation to Polar Bear Coolers for saving my expensive arthritis medication (Humira) when Hurricane Irene hit and I lost electrical power in my townhome for over 16 hours... I purchased a Polar Bear Cooler medium medical cooler in May 2010 after I started taking the biologic medicine Humira for my arthritis. Humira has to be continually refrigerated between 36 to 46 degrees F and it's a very expensive arthritis medication (one that has been working for me after numerous other anti-rheumatic meds failed over the past year). I wanted the medical cooler to transport the medication from the pharmacy to home and in case of (what I thought would be short) power outages and brief road trips. When I purchased the medical cooler I sure did not envision losing power for a prolonged time period as a result of a hurricane a few months later... On Saturday August 26th Hurricane Irene made landfall on the Outer Banks and shortly thereafter Irene made its way up the coast impacting the Northern Virginia area where I reside. The Tropical Storm force winds and heavy rain were enough to cause numerous trees in my neighborhood to topple over and down power lines. We lost power on Saturday evening for a few hours (during which time I used my medical cooler) and then again in the middle of the night - around 1 AM Saturday morning. Fortunately I woke up about an hour after we had lost power; probably because I heard the heavy winds and rain outside. I quickly retrieved my Humira from my powerless refrigerator and placed it into my medical cooler surrounded by the ice gel packs that I also purchased from Polar Bear Coolers. The second power outage that happened in the middle of the night on Saturday lasted much longer than I anticipated and Dominion Power was not able to provide us a firm estimate of restoration date/time due to the immense outage area and massive restoration work needed. By late Sunday afternoon August 27th, my Humira had been in the medical cooler for over 12 hours when I was able to find a neighbor about a mile from me who had a generator (NOT a common commodity in the Northern Virginia area, though they may be more prevalent post-Irene these days). Without opening the Polar Bear Cooler the entire time, I was able to drive to my neighbor's house around the downed trees and power lines. We took the Humira out of the insulated waterproof inner box in the medical cooler and found the Humira to be at about 42 F, which was well within the safe range, after 14 hours in the medical cooler. We put it in my neighbor's refrigerator powered by her generator and she put the gel ice packs in her freezer to refreeze so that I could retrieve them later after my power was finally restored. The Polar Bear medical cooler truly saved my box of Humira, which was worth close to $2K in value, besides the hassle I would have had to go through to refill it before I needed to take it on Thursday September 1st. I couldn't be happier with the way my Polar Bear Cooler performed; it exceeded my expectations. Since then I have purchased 2 additional ice gel packs from Polar Bear Coolers so that I now have 4 total which should last me a good 24 hours (2 ice packs each 12 hours) in preparation for the next power outage event (that I certainly hope never happens, but better to be over-prepared next time). Because I live in a townhome condo, I have no yard or place/room for a generator that would be safe. Hence, the more vital it is that I have the Polar Bear Cooler to keep my medications cold and buy me enough time to get my medications to a place where there is a functional refrigerator in the event of an extended power outage. I highly recommend Polar Bear Coolers for anyone who has medications that require refrigeration, whether they are expensive biologic medications like mine or not...it's one of the best investments I have ever made...and it can also be used to keep non-meds chilled too of course...thanks again Polar Bear Coolers!!! I'm hoping I don't have to do another extended "test" of my Polar Bear Cooler this hurricane season of this winter, but I'm ready if it happens...and will let you know how it goes...keep cool... Best Regards, Denise of Northern Virginia area, post Hurricane Irene

Having travelled with MS meds since they came out in the early 90's, I had devised all sorts of "systems" to keep my meds Bought this for trip to Costa Rica it makes a perfect cooler too when not for meds. Coincidentally our kayak rental guy was friends with this inventor and took my picture with my polar bear!

Just wanted to give you an update on our coolers in the fire trucks. We have been over 90 degrees for the past few weeks (I know it's not Georgia heat, but it's hot for us). I have had no concerns from my firefighters over the bags not working. The only comment that I have received was that the bags keep the IV fluids too cold and they have ice crystals forming in them. I just might have to get one for keeping my water cool at soccer games. Do you mind if I give your contact information to my medical supply vendor? They are always looking for new products to carry.

We started therapeutic hypothermia a few years ago using electric coolers. After several models and modifications, we moved to the Polar Bear Coolers. The staff at Polar Bear was excellent to work with and very accommodating to our modification requests. The only complaint I heard after our switch to the Polar Bear coolers was that out IV solutions were too cold, which really wasn't a problem when you're trying to cool a patient.

One of my concerns about being put on Humira 6 months ago was traveling overseas. I had no idea how I would be able to keep the meds refrigerated on the flight over and on travels throughout Europe. I found the Polar Bear Ice-N-Go Med Cooler online and talked to their very helpful customer service personnel who assured me that this product would meet my needs. And she was right!! The cooler worked GREAT, was easy to use and kept my meds at the right temperature for many hours by just adding ice occassionally. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Ice-N-Go Med Cooler and am so grateful this product exists. Without the Ice-N-Go Med cooler I would not have been able to make my month long trip to Europe. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

I have both given and received several Polar Bear Coolers throughout the years. I can not speak highly enough about them!! The coolers look great, are extremely versatile, and also very high quality. This is a foolproof gift for anyone and any occasion! They will literally keep ice formed for an entire day or two. Also, they are great for transporting food and keeping a dish hot. They are the best!!

I have tried Coleman, Igloo and several other brands of coolers over the years. I am in a truck (un-airconditioned) all day and have recorded temps. inside the truck during the summer (Arkansas) in excess of 110 degrees. I purchased a polar bear 24 pack and some of the icepacks and have been able to keep ice in my drinks the entire day. This is truly a great product that in my opinion far exceeds what the company claims it will do. Dealing with the people at Polar Bear is also a delight. They are very courteous and responsive!!
